Lijiang is where a first Yunnan journey usually meets the mountains. The old town, Shuhe and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain sit close together, so the mistake is not missing a sight. It is trying to do the mountain, the busiest lanes and a long onward transfer on the same day.

Treat Lijiang as the northern end of a coherent route, not as a second Dali. Dali is the lake basin. Lijiang is higher, colder in the morning, and more dramatic if the weather holds.

I would rather you have two unhurried nights here than one exhausted checklist day.

What Lijiang is good for

Lijiang works well when you want:

  • Two or three nights at the end of a Kunming–Dali–Shaxi route
  • A mountain day at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Blue Moon Valley
  • Time in the old towns after the midday tour groups leave
  • A quieter overnight in Shuhe instead of the busiest stretch of Dayan

It is less useful if you treat the central lanes as the whole trip, or if you add Shangri-La to a short week and leave Lijiang as a drive-through.

For the wider first route, start with the Yunnan travel guide. The usual direction is Kunming → Dali → Shaxi → Lijiang.

How many days in Lijiang?

One night: possible if you arrive by afternoon and leave the next morning, and you already know you will skip the mountain. You will mostly see the old town at its busiest.

Two nights: the minimum I recommend for a first visit. One day for Shuhe or the quieter lanes, one day for the mountain if the weather and tickets work.

Three nights: better if you want a buffer for weather, a slower morning, or time in Shuhe without rushing Jade Dragon the same afternoon.

Four nights or more: only if Lijiang itself is the point of the trip, or you are using it as a base before Shangri-La. Extra nights here should not come from cutting Dali or Shaxi to a single night.

Old Town or Shuhe?

Most first visitors are choosing between two feelings, not five neighborhoods.

AreaBest forTrade-off
Lijiang Old Town (Dayan)Walking to dinner, seeing the canals and lanes after the midday crowds thinThe central streets are commercial; go early or late, not at noon
Shuhe Ancient TownQuieter mornings, courtyards, and a slower overnightYou still transfer for Jade Dragon; it is not a hidden village with no visitors

If Lijiang Old Town is a festival that never quite ends, Shuhe is the quieter sibling. It sits about fifteen minutes north and was a leather-working town on the Tea Horse Road. Stay there if you want the sound of the stream back, and keep the Old Town as a walk rather than your bedroom.

Foreign-passport hotels still need to be able to register you. Confirm that before you pay, especially in a small courtyard guesthouse. The hotels for foreigners guide covers the check.

Old-town ticket rules change. Some travelers still need a maintenance or scenic-area ticket, and a hotel may ask to see it. Check the current rule for your dates instead of copying a price from an old article.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Blue Moon Valley

This is the landscape that makes Lijiang different from Dali. It is also the day that fails if you treat it as a quick morning add-on.

Plan a full day. Cable cars, the outdoor performance some itineraries include, and Blue Moon Valley all depend on weather, operation and tickets. At this altitude, start earlier than you would in Dali and keep the plan flexible.

Go if mountain scenery is the reason you came north.

Skip or shorten it if you only have one night, you are already tired from the Shaxi road, or you would rather walk Shuhe than sit in a scenic-area queue.

The 8-day Essence of Yunnan puts Shuhe, the Yunshanping cable car, Blue Moon Valley and the Impression Lijiang performance on the same mountain day. That only works when the transfers are already arranged and the weather cooperates. On a self-built trip, do not copy that density unless you like a full outdoor day.

How this fits the 6-day and 8-day journeys

First Encounter Yunnan (6 days): Lijiang is the finish. You arrive after two nights in Shaxi, spend time in the old town once the midday lanes ease, and use the last day around Jade Dragon and Blue Moon Valley. That is a coherent end to the westbound route, not a second province.

The Essence of Yunnan (8 days): Lijiang is the middle, not the end. After Dali you continue north toward Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La. The extra days exist so the mountain day and the highland transfer are not the same afternoon.

If you are building your own dates, use the 6-day pattern unless you already know you want Shangri-La. Adding the highland loop to a six-day week usually creates more driving than experience.

Altitude and weather

Lijiang sits much higher than Kunming or Dali. Mornings can be cold even when the lake basin still feels mild. Pack a layer you would not need in Kunming.

Give yourself an easy first evening if you have come straight from the lowlands. A heavy mountain day on the same afternoon you arrive is how people start Shangri-La already tired.

Autumn is often the easiest season for clearer mountain views. Summer is greener and wetter. Winter mornings are genuinely cold. The Yunnan seasonal notes explain why “spring all year” does not describe this end of the province.

Practical notes

High-speed rail works well between Kunming, Dali and Lijiang. Shaxi is the stretch that is easier by road. If you skip Shaxi to “save a day for Lijiang,” you usually arrive more tired, not with a better mountain day.

Payments, data and maps are easier to finish in Kunming or Dali than on the morning of a cable-car booking. If anything in the China pre-departure checklist is still open, do it before you come north.

Google Maps is a poor guide to old-town gates and village lanes. Save Chinese place names and use a local map app. Why Google Maps fails in China explains the practical setup.

Should Lijiang be in your first Yunnan week?

Yes, as the mountain finish after Dali — and after Shaxi if you can stay overnight there.

Give it two or three nights. One night is a glimpse of the busiest streets.

Do not add Shangri-La, Lugu Lake and Jade Dragon to the same short week. Pick a direction. Lugu is a different mountain road and is not a current published journey on this site.

If you already know your dates and group size, tell Joy what you have in mind. A rough idea is enough to start.
