Shaxi Ancient Town is roughly 100 kilometres by road from Lijiang. Although the drive looks short on a map, I recommend allowing around 1.5 to 2.5 hours once you include pickup, luggage, road conditions, traffic and getting to your hotel.

There is no train station in Shaxi. To reach Lijiang, you will need to travel by road: on a direct passenger shuttle, in a shared car, with a private driver, via Jianchuan, or by self-driving. Solo travellers with modest luggage may find a shuttle or shared car sufficient. Families, larger groups and anyone hoping to visit Shibao Mountain will find a private transfer more flexible.

How Far Is Shaxi from Lijiang?

The usual road-distance estimate is 98–100 km. Some map applications show an ideal driving time closer to an hour, but that excludes collecting passengers outside Shaxi's pedestrian streets, loading luggage, entering Lijiang and reaching your actual hotel.

The destination makes a difference. Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe, Baisha, the railway station and the airport are not interchangeable drop-off points. Always provide the full Chinese hotel name, address and map pin instead of simply asking to go to “Lijiang.”

Taking a Direct Tourist Shuttle

Passenger transport between Lijiang and Shaxi has operated in the past. A customised return service was reported in 2023, with further station-bus arrangements publicised in 2024. That history is useful, but an old announcement does not confirm today's timetable.

Ask your Shaxi accommodation whether a direct shuttle operates on your departure date and how to book it. Local ticketing information may be available through DiDi or the 丽江交运 (Lijiang Jiaoyun) WeChat channel. Have someone confirm the precise route, since other places in China also have the name Shaxi.

The shuttle works best if you travel alone or as a couple, have manageable luggage, can follow a fixed departure time, and want to go straight to central Lijiang. Before paying, verify the exact Shaxi boarding location, arrival stop, ticketing requirements, luggage allowance, and whether the service operates on your date.

Shaxi's historic centre is partly pedestrianised. You may need to walk from your guesthouse to a nearby road or designated pickup area.

Travelling by Shared Car

Shared cars can be arranged by guesthouses, local drivers or Chinese booking platforms. They often offer a more convenient pickup than a fixed shuttle, but a scheduled pickup does not always mean immediate departure: the driver may first need to collect other passengers.

For one or two travellers, it can be a good compromise between price and convenience. Before confirming, ask whether the fare is per passenger or per vehicle, how many people will share the car, where you will be collected and dropped off, and whether the driver will make further stops.

Luggage capacity matters more than it may seem. If you have several large suitcases, send photos or dimensions so the operator can confirm space.

Booking a Private Transfer

With a private transfer, you choose the departure time and vehicle size, and your driver takes you from the nearest accessible point to your Shaxi accommodation to your Lijiang hotel or its designated drop-off area.

This is particularly useful with children, multiple suitcases, a group, or a hotel in Shuhe or Baisha. It also allows you to make the transfer part of a longer journey:

Dali → Shaxi (overnight) → Shibao Mountain → Lijiang

Is Shibao Mountain Worth Visiting on the Way?

Shibao Mountain (Shibaoshan / 石宝山) has historic grottoes, temples and forested mountain paths. It deserves several hours, not a quick roadside photo stop.

A sensible plan is to leave Shaxi in the morning, explore Shibao Mountain, continue north and check into your Lijiang accommodation later in the afternoon. A private vehicle lets you keep your luggage together while sightseeing.

If you would rather enjoy a slow morning in Shaxi or spend the afternoon exploring Lijiang, travel directly instead. Adding Shibao Mountain, Baisha, Shuhe and Lijiang Old Town to the same transfer day is likely to feel rushed.

Joy's Local Perspective

I grew up in Yunnan. One thing I often notice when planning trips is the temptation to fill every transfer day with attractions. Moving from Shaxi to Lijiang still involves packing, hotel access and adjusting to a new place. Add Shibao Mountain because its history and scenery genuinely interest you—not because the itinerary has an empty space.

Travelling with children or large luggage, or want a visit to Shibao Mountain? Ask Joy about a Shaxi–Lijiang private transfer.

Travelling via Jianchuan

It may be possible to use local public transport along this route:

Shaxi → Jianchuan → Lijiang

This is best suited to experienced independent travellers who can communicate in Chinese and navigate county-level bus stations. Expect at least one transfer, less predictable connection times and extra luggage handling.

As direct passenger routes have operated between Shaxi and Lijiang, travelling via Jianchuan usually makes sense only if direct options are unavailable or you specifically prefer local buses. Confirm each connection before setting out.

Driving from Shaxi to Lijiang

Self-driving offers flexibility, but a foreign driving licence or International Driving Permit alone generally does not authorise driving in mainland China. Eligible short-term visitors normally need a Chinese temporary driving permit and must meet rental-company requirements.

Check that your permit is valid, the car is insured, navigation works in China, and your Shaxi guesthouse and Lijiang hotel have provided parking and access instructions. The main roads are paved, but mountain bends, local traffic and poor weather can slow the drive. Avoid narrow village-road shortcuts merely because an app shows a shorter route.

Vehicles cannot enter many parts of Lijiang Old Town; ask your hotel for the nearest legal parking or drop-off gate.

Which Transport Option Should You Choose?

Choose a tourist shuttle if your luggage is light and the verified departure suits you. Consider a shared car if you want a direct journey but do not need full control of the schedule. Choose a private transfer for children, large luggage, groups, special hotel locations or Shibao Mountain.

Use the Jianchuan connection if a direct service is unavailable and you are comfortable with local transport in Chinese. Self-drive only if you have the correct Chinese driving permission and are confident on mountain roads.

Where Should You Stay in Lijiang?

Your hotel location affects your arrival, so choose an area before booking transport.

Lijiang Old Town

For a first visit, Lijiang Old Town offers the greatest choice of restaurants, shops and evening activity. It is also the busiest option. Drivers generally stop at the closest permitted gate if your hotel lies within the pedestrian zone.

Shuhe Ancient Town

Shuhe feels quieter and more relaxed in the evening, with convenient access to Baisha and northern Lijiang. After a peaceful night in Shaxi, it can make for a gentler change of pace than the busiest part of Lijiang Old Town.

Baisha Ancient Town

Baisha, farther north near Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Yuhu Village, suits travellers who value village atmosphere and mountain scenery more than nightlife. Some shared services will not include Baisha in their standard drop-off area, so ask about any extra charge.

There is no universally best neighbourhood. Choose Lijiang Old Town for convenience and activity, Shuhe for a quieter base, and Baisha for village surroundings. See the Lijiang Travel Guide before booking.

What Time Should You Leave Shaxi?

If you want to visit Shibao Mountain or have plans in Lijiang that afternoon, leave in the morning. If you want a last leisurely breakfast and walk around Shaxi's streets and Yujin Bridge, a late-morning or midday departure can work better.

Avoid leaving too late if heavy rain is forecast, the hotel is difficult to access, or you must catch a train or flight that day. For a private itinerary, I usually consider either a morning departure with Shibao Mountain or a slower morning followed by a direct journey.

Including Shaxi in a Private Yunnan Journey

Shaxi fits naturally between Dali and Lijiang:

Kunming → Dali → Shaxi → Lijiang

Our 6-day private Yunnan journey includes two nights in Dali, one in Shaxi and two in Lijiang, plus private road transport, Shibao Mountain and a full day at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. It avoids backtracking and gives Shaxi a place of its own rather than reducing it to a lunch stop.
