Which entry option fits your trip?
Indonesian ordinary passport holders usually need a visa for a regular mainland China holiday. Visa-free transit and regional exemptions have separate conditions. Start with your actual passport and itinerary, rather than a headline saying China is visa-free.

Nationality and residence are different. An Indonesian passport holder living in Singapore still needs to check the Indonesian passport rules. Someone living in Indonesia with another nationality should use the rules for their own passport.
Is China visa-free for Indonesian passport holders?
Indonesia is not on the nationwide unilateral 30-day exemption list. But it is eligible for 240-hour transit, and Indonesian ordinary passports are covered by Hainan's regional 30-day exemption.
Hainan entry does not authorize onward travel to Dali, Beijing or other destinations outside the province. There are also tightly scoped ASEAN tourist-group exemptions for Xishuangbanna and Guilin: the official regional policy requires a China-registered travel agency, group entry and exit, specified ports and a maximum six-day stay in the relevant area. They are not a general exemption for an independent trip around China.
For most readers planning several mainland cities, the useful choice is a tourist visa or a qualifying transit itinerary. Decide this first, before comparing hotels or arranging domestic transport.
240-hour visa-free transit: does your route qualify?
The transit route test is country or region A → mainland China → a different country or region B. Use the actual flight sequence immediately before and after mainland China, including connections. Your nationality determines eligibility; it does not replace the onward-route requirement.

These are route illustrations, not confirmed flights or entry approvals. Tourism is allowed during qualifying transit. You still need an ordinary passport, a confirmed onward ticket and an itinerary using designated ports and permitted travel areas. Check the official transit requirements before booking.
Check destinations as well as flights
The permission is not unrestricted nationwide travel. Read the official Eligible Ports and Permitted Stay Areas table for each intended stop and your departure port. Do not assume that all of Yunnan is included, or that arrival in Shanghai restricts you simply to Shanghai Municipality.
The published stay clock starts at midnight following entry; use the immigration-issued departure deadline. If your onward flight or domestic route changes, recheck the plan. The China Visa Checker can help organize the decision, but the current official rules and border decision govern entry.
Can Indonesians get a China visa on arrival?
Do not plan a regular China holiday on the assumption that an Indonesian passport lets you buy a tourist visa at any airport. Visa-free transit, a regional exemption and a port visa are different entry arrangements.
The NIA's port-visa FAQ describes a conditional application route for urgent entry needs when a visa cannot be obtained overseas in time. It is not automatic permission based only on nationality. If a tour operator proposes a specific port or group arrangement, ask for its exact legal basis, supporting documents, applicable port and restrictions before paying.
For an ordinary holiday that does not qualify for an exemption, arrange the appropriate visa before departure. If your flight leaves soon, changing the label from “tourist” to “transit” does not make an ineligible itinerary qualify.
How to apply for a China tourist visa in Indonesia
Choose the centre serving your application location through the official visa-centre website. The steps below summarize the Jakarta online procedure; confirm arrangements with your own centre.
- Select the correct location, register and complete the online application.
- Upload passport, photo and supporting documents for the visa category, then submit.
- Watch for requests to correct or supplement documents.
- After online review is completed, follow the passport-submission instructions and bring the Visa Application Certificate and required originals.
- Pay the applicable charges and collect the passport as instructed.
Online review completion is not final visa approval. Prepare your real itinerary and accommodation details early, and make sure passport names and dates are consistent across documents. Use the centre's category-specific checklist for the definitive document requirements.
Timing, fees and fingerprints
Jakarta advises online submission at least 30 days before travel. Its published collection estimates after offline submission are the fourth working day for regular service and the third for express service; the pickup date is an estimate. Allow for online review and holidays too.
Visa fees and service charges are separate. Check current local notices for charges, fingerprint exemptions and submission options rather than copying an old checklist. Choose the relevant city; Jakarta's arrangements should not be assumed to apply everywhere in Indonesia.
Common mistakes before a China holiday
Reading “visa-free” as unconditional. Ask which policy applies, which destinations it covers and what documents it requires. Different exemptions answer different travel situations.
Checking the route before adding a connection. A transit flight via Singapore or another country can change the countries on either side of mainland China. Recheck the final booked sequence.
Confusing Hong Kong or Macao with mainland entry. Their immigration arrangements are separate. A visit there followed by a return to mainland China means another mainland entry; check your visa's entry allowance or the next exemption separately.
Treating the visa's expiry date as its stay allowance. Validity, number of entries and duration per stay are separate fields. Read the issued visa before finalizing a multi-city or repeat-entry plan.
After entry: prepare your China trip

- Alipay for foreign visitors: prepare payments before departure.
- Internet in China: compare connectivity options.
- China high-speed rail booking: understand bookings and passport checks.
